St. AugustineSaint Augustine, (354-430), Bishop of Hippo and "Doctor of the Church". Accepted by most scholars to be the most important figure in the ancient Western church. St. Augustine was born in Numidia in North Africa.He exerted a tremendous influence in the Christian world; stood forth as a champion of orthodoxy and fused the religion of the New Testament with the Platonic tradition of Greek philosophy.
