2012 CHAMPIONSHIP IN VIENNA, AUSTRIA

The competition took place on Saturday 17.11.12 at the Austria Center in Vienna, during the game show "Spielefest Wien".
16 players from 9 countries took part in the competition: Germany, Austria, France, Hungary, USA, Canada, Greece, the Netherlands and Switzerland.

After 4 preliminary rounds, the 4 best players of the competition played for the World Champion title during a very tight final round.
The very last trick of the round decided who our new 2012 Champion is: Thomas Kessler from Switzerland.

2. Ede Markos - Hungary
3. Rene Punz - Austria
4. Emilie Badey - France

The first prize was an Apple iPod Touch MP3-player, second prize an Apple iPod nano MP3-player and the third prize an Apple iPod shuffel MP3-player.
All participants were then invited to relax and have a nice city tour in horse carriage through the streets of Vienna followed by a dinner at a typical Austrian restaurant in the heart of the Austrian capital.

PAEAN to Mactonight
From the (obviously warped) mind of Brian W:
Allan Shepherd … John Landy … Tenzing Norgay … Mactonight… (there must be others, but I can’t remember…)What do all of these people have in common? These are the names of some of history’s proverbial bridesmaids, relegated to the obscurity of a supporting role for having each been the second person to accomplish an amazing feat.
Timing is everything!
Allan Shepherd was the second man in space, following John Glenn’s historic flight.
John Landy of Australia broke the 4-minute mile only 46 days after Roger Bannister did.|
Tenzing Norgay is credited with being the second person in the world to reach the summit of Mount Everest. He was Sir Edmund Hillary's Sherpa, arriving at the top only minutes later.
And Mactonight… well, Mactonight surpassed the seemingly insurmountable threshold of 2000 Master Points. Unfortunately for Mac, this feat, like so many others in his Wizard career, was accomplished in the shadow of the incomparable Cargobeep, who did it a couple of months earlier.
Nevertheless, this is an achievement worth celebrating, warranting the online Wizard world’s equivalent of a 21-gun salute and a ticker tape parade, or at least a congratulatory posting like Cargobeep got when she accomplished it... first!
On the other hand, I’m sure Mac would settle for at least a “wtg Mac” on the main chat page from a few respected Wizard players.
Yes, it’s true. Like those names mentioned above, and so many others who we have all forgotten about, Mactonight is the victim of something akin to “second-child syndrome”:
-- “Hey Wizard, Merlin, Mumm, everyone, look at me! I got 2000 MP! Isn’t that great?”
-- “Yes, very nice Mac. Has anyone seen Cargobeep lately? Is she playing this month?”
That’s the way it goes when you are a perpetual runner-up.
Is it fair? No, of course not. Is it understandable? Sort of, I guess.
Is it normal? Yes, unfortunately for Mac and the others, it’s completely normal.
So what can be done about it? Well, there are a few options.
First, you can be like the Avis car-rental company back in the ‘70s and ‘80s, and simply try harder.
Or you could be like Tonya Harding, and try to eliminate the competition so that you can claim the spotlight for yourself. However, this approach often results in drawing the wrong kind of attention, and sometimes even jail time.
Or finally, you can just sit back and accept the fact that someone beat you to the punch, knowing in your own heart that you too achieved the seemingly unachievable, and being content with the knowledge that, some day, your name will be remembered along such notables as Allan Shepherd, John Landy, Tenzing Norgay, and …. ummm…. those other ones ….
Way to go Mactonight! 2000 Master Points! We’re all (somewhat) proud of you!
Maybe you will be the first person to…
Wait… is Cargo hosting? Hope I can get in before it fills up…

TD Monthly (Toy Directory, October 2012)

This ever-popular card game has people from around the world in search of their own pack. Wizard is similar to the card game Hearts. Three to six players try to correctly guess the number of tricks, or bids, one would win in each round. Points are awarded for correct predictions and the person with the most points wins. Wizard has been named one of the top 100 games five times by Toys & Games Magazines. The Wizard craze has caught on world-wide - the “World Wizard Tournament” was held in Toronto on July 10, 2004.
— In a late Summer 2012 survey, Greg Larson, owner of Larson's Toys and Games in Columbus, Ohio, told TDmonthly that Wizard was one of his top-two best selling card games.

The guidelines for the 2012 Wizard Tournament in Vienna, Austria are showm below:

TOURNAMENT GUIDELINES

Wizard World Championship

1. General information
1.1. Number of players: 4-5 participants per table
1.2. Duration: 45 minutes per round
1.3. Rounds: 5 (4 qualification rounds and 1 final round)
2. Code of conduct
2.1. Each player commits to observe the game rules and to act with fair play.
2.2. If a player notices a mistake on his side or from another player, he has to notify it immediately.
2.3. Each player has to play until the end of a round, even if he knows that he does not have any chance to win.
2.4. The players have to hold their cards so that all players can see them (of course, only showing the back of the cards).

3. General rules 3.1. Only the Wizard games provided by AMIGO will be used during the tournament.
3.2. The execution of different penalties in case of mistake is at the discretion of the organizer.
3.3. Any ambiguity or conflict has to be resolved by the tournament organizers.
4. Game rules 4.1. The tournament will be played following the general rules of the AMIGO Wizard game. Any other rule variation or extension is not accepted.
4.2. There will be four qualification rounds and one final round.

4.3. To ensure a fair scoring, the „tournament special rules" will apply (see no. 9).
4.4. Each round lasts 45 minutes. We will inform 5 minutes before the time is over. If a table keeps playing after the time is over, each player of this table will get 10 minus points.

5. Table combination for the qualification rounds 5.1. For fair play conditions, the table combination will be set with the same number of players at every table, as far as possible.
5.2. New table combinations will be drawn after each round.
5.3. The first player at each table will also be drawn.

6. Tournament procedures
6.1. Qualification rounds  All players will play 4 rounds.   Each player receives points depending on his ranking at the end of each preliminary round. (see no. 8, Scoring).
The final scores as well as the actual points obtained during the round have to be reported on the appropriate list and handed to the organizers.

6.2. Final round  The scores of each participant are summed up at the end of the preliminary rounds. The best 4 players will play the final round.

If several players have the same scores, the actual points obtained will be taken into account.
If more than 5 players reach the final round, they will have to play a semi-final round. In this extra round, only the actual points scored by the players will be taken into account to determine the finalists.

7. Ranking 7.1. The ranking is determined by the number of points scored by each player after each round. A new scoring starts at the beginning of each round.
7.2. If several players have the same number of points at the end of a round, they should proceed as follows:  The player who most frequently scored positive points during the 10 trick rounds gets the better ranking.
If there is still a tie situation, the player who scored the highest score during the rounds is the winner.
If there is still no winner, both players get the same number of points according to their common ranking. The unoccupied places and their matching scores will not be assigned. The player with the next highest number of points scores the points that correspond to his actual place
Example: If two players get 45 points for the 1st place, the player with the next best score receives the points of the 3rd place (20 points) and not the points for the 2nd place.

8. Scoring
8.1. Each player receives the following points depending on his ranking at the end of each round:
1st place: 45 points
2nd place: 30 points
3rd place: 20 points
4th place: 10 points
5th place: 5 points

9. Tournament special rules
9.1. No matter the number of players at a table, one round consists of 10 games which should be played as follows:
5 players per table:
10 rounds with the following number of cards: 2-4-5-6-7-8-9-10-11-12
4 players per table:
10 rounds with the following number of cards: 1-3-5-7-9-11-12-13-14-15
3 players per table:
10 rounds with the following number of cards: 2-4-6-8-10-12-14-16-18-20
9.2. These rules involve that the total number of tricks predicted by the players may not equal the number of tricks available. Only the player who gives his prediction at the end of a round hast o do it so that there is always one trick less or one trick more than the number of available tricks (plus/minus one variation).

9.3. Example: 5 players play a round, in which each player has 10 cards in his hand. Peter announces 4 tricks, Lena 0, Tobias 2 and Carola 3 tricks. Now Steffi would like to announce one trick, but she cannot because the total number of tricks predicted would equal the number of tricks available (10). Steffi has to announce another number of tricks.

10. Penalties10.1. If a player does not follow suit by mistake although he could have:
The player who played a wrong colour gets 60 minus points at the end of the current round.
10.2.
If a players arrives too late:
If a player arrives five minutes after the beginning of the tournament, the round will start without this player. The player will get the score corresponding to the last place for this round.

The People Have Spoken

I told you so....now do you believe me?

true fun for everyone, May 15, 2007
lori
This game is ideal because it's simple to learn, quick to play, and very entertaining. Even my father, who really doesn't enjoy cards or board games at all, can easily be persuaded to join us for a round of Wizard. We've found that 4-5 people playing this game makes for the best setup because there are more chances for missed bids (and thus an added drama factor!) and the game doesn't last too long. You'll be surprised at how attached you can become to a card game--whether you miss your bid or trump everyone else, you're likely to become emotionally involved, and that makes this game an intense but fun way to spend an afternoon or evening. Five stars for sure on this product!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wizard Card Game (The Game of Ultimate Trump), February 7, 2007

If you like card games with trump and strategy that are extremely easy to learn, you'll love this game. It is similar to "Up the River, Down the River" and a little like Euchre and Pinnocle, except much easier with much more strategy. Also, you can actually win a given round by taking zero tricks, you can win by loosing all the hands. Highly Recommended for all ages.

5.0 out of 5 stars Our Favorite Family Game!, August 22, 2006

We were introduced to this game about 2 years ago by a distant relative and have since hooked most of our immediate family. We play everytime we get together. At first it may be a little discouraging because you have to make your exact bid or you lose points, but once you get the hang of it the bidding becomes easier. My older kids (10 & 8) love it, but I would recommend it more for older kids and adults. There is also a website wizardcards.com you can register and play for free. Very fun, but I would get the cards first and learn how to play before going online.

Every year for Christmas I try to find a good family game. This is 2008's great game. We love that any number from 3 to 6 can play. There is a lot of strategy and changing course in the middle of the game as you try to take the exact number of tricks bid before the play starts. Two quick tips: The score sheet is a little small as we found it easiest to put the hand score/total score into the little square. Also, write down the side of the score sheet either who is dealing (we use deals) or who leads for each hand. It is important to know who is leading the round. The first game we played (3 people) took about 1-1/4 hours. Each subsequent game was quicker, even though we had up to 6 people. I would say the game would be better with 12/13 years old and up, but a precocious 10 year old would be ok.
Follow up 3 January 2009 -- I forgot one tip. We gave pennies to each person based on what they bid. That way, each person could remember what they bid and everyone could see everyone else's bid.

Wizard is one of the greatest card games created and kids and adults of all ages can play. It is great for family and friend reunions or just a fun family night together. Everyone who has learned how to play the game is hooked. It has provided hours of fun and cries of disbelief in our family.

This is a great card game. Everyone we have introduced to this game loves it. The Jester and Wizard cards add some fun twists to the outcome, and if you fall behind initially, you can still catch-up as the number of cards per hand increase at the end.
My only complaint, and the reason I only give it 4 stars, is that the cards tend to get sticky with extended use, and given you can shuffle the deck 15 to 20 times per game, the cards get a lot of handling. A plastic card surface would have been better. The best solution I have found is to purchase more than one set. I am sure the manufacturer, with whom I am not affiliated, loves me for saying that.

I bought this game to suplement a Spades group I run. When we have 6 people, 2 have to sit out while the others play. So now with Wizard accomodating anywhere from 3 to 6, I can have everyone play, no matter how many people! We've had 18 playing - 12 at Spades, and 6 at Wizard. It's a lot of fun.

There's nothing here that can't be accomplished with a regular deck and the rules. That said, this is the hands-down best game of cards I've ever played. I may be naive in saying that, but our family gets together about once a week and plays.
I've played other games of trump and while skill is involved, there's a lot of luck involved too. Wizard is uniquely skill oriented. And while you might still get a lucky hand, even players who are unluckly dealt consistently poor hands will still often win the game, as scoring is based on the number of tricks you plan on taking.
No question about it, the price of the deck is worth the rule sheet alone. Fantastically fun game.

Have played this game in the past, but wanted by own deck. We just played with THREE players and it was just as interesting as with four, only there are more hands to play and you have to hold more cards near the end of the game. The cards are coated so I think they'll last a long time. The score sheets are a nice touch, but the print size and spacing are a bit problematic for these older eyes. Think we're going to put a sheet on the printer scanner and enlarge it. Overall, a fun game!

Was introduced to this game several years ago. Have since purchased copies for friends. It is an instant hit - because it is for all ages, easy to learn the basics, hard to master. Recently gave it to a game playing family including Mom who rarely wins games against her college children. Mom has won and the "house college guru" has been shut out. He's taking it back to school to "work on" in his spare time. A real winner.

Wizard was a good card game that can be played by up to 6 people, we tried this on New Year's day for an hour and was pleasantly surprised at how fun it was. While the rules are basic, it is open to interpretation - during my experience some people had an idea in their head what it should be like and started incorporating other card game rules. After several goes the game becomes addicting and the rules are easier to follow as everyone starts to understnd the concept. We will definitely play this again during another family get together. Highly recommended purchase.

We LOVE this game. we play this game when we get together with with friends and introduce it to family when we are all together. It's lots of fun, competitive (sometimes there is yelling st other ppl for stealing your "trick") and great all around game. I would recommend this for adults or older kids. It can be a bit confusing in the beginning but once everyone gets the hang of it, its great. and it's a longer game so its great to play on game night

Wizard is a fun card game that takes the game "Oh Hell" to another level by the addition of eight extra cards. It can be played by as few as 3 or as many as 10 (or more). The more players, the fewer the rounds. It's easy to learn the basics, but depends on skill as well as luck. A great game for a group of friends.

My family and friends all love Wizard - it's like Up & Down the River on steroids. I love the element of chaos that the Wizard and Jester cards bring to the game, and we've all learned to be unattached to winning or losing - it's just fun to play! I highly recommend this game to anyone who likes 'trick' card games.

My co-workers and I love this game. Great for playing during our lunch break. We've modified the rules slightly such that when we pass the number of cards in hand as there are players, the last person to bid, has to bid 'off' of the number of tricks. So if there are five players and you have six cards in hand, the last player's bid can't make the total 6, it must be greater than or less than six. It can be a punishing game, but rewarding :)

Easy to play - hard to win!, June 23, 2011
By Kadiebug "Kadie" (Colorado, USA) - .
This review is from: Wizard Card Game (Cards)
One of my family's new favorite games to play! Very easy to learn, but very hard to win! Each round, players lay down a card in order around the table, the leading suit must be followed, and high card wins. There is also a trump suit each round that will trump any other suit played. And to top that all off there is 4 Wizards (that always win) and 4 Jesters (that always lose). Either of these "blue suited" cards can be played whenever. Which means that ace of trump (or any other good card) could lose if a wizard is played!
To top all that off, each person bids how many "tricks" (or turns) they think they will win this round. You get 20 points for getting a correct bid, plus 10 for every trick you take! And you lose 10 points for every trick you were off by! So if you bid 3, but ended up taking 4, you lose 10 points!
So very easy, and so frustratingly difficult to win! Fun fun game, that can be played with 3-6 people, so it's easy to just sit down and play. No worrying about teams, or having an odd number. Highly recommend!

Friends of ours introduced us to this card game & we were instantly hooked. We prefer trick-taking card games & we think this has to be one of the best. We used to play a lot of spades & euchre but this is better. It is based on the card game "Oh hell", which we didn't used to play for whatever reason. The addition of the wizard & jester cards to the deck makes the game that much more strategic & interesting. It's also nice that you don't need exactly 4 people to play this game. It's unfortunate this game can't be found at major retail stores so everyone could easily pick up a deck. Thanks to amazon for carrying it! If you like card games, esp. ones like euchre, don't hesitate, buy this game now. You won't be disappointed!

This card game is our friends and family favorite! We use to play spades all the time but Wizard takes card playing to a new level. In spades there are people who bid high and or low..Wizard takes all of that away and really makes a person think and "play" the game.
This Christmas I gave Wizard as a gift and the funny thing is that the person who opened the gift was so excited and actually said they loved this game and have been wanting to purchase it!
The only thing I would tell people to do when you buy the game is read the directions and take notes. The game isn't hard but you can get confused on how the points are awarded.

We introduced this great game to our community and now a bunch of us have Wizard Tournaments once a month. Twelve of us play at 3 tables (4 players per table). We each keep our own scores and after 5 hands, the two players scoring the lowest move to the next table for the next round of 5 hands. The person with the highest score after 3 rounds of 5 hands each (1-5, 6-10, 11-15) is the winner. We never tire of this game and teach it to anyone who loves cards (and some who don't, but they get hooked). They catch on easily.

"trump" card game. If you like Hearts or Spades, you'll love Wizard. Our kids have been old enough to play with us for a few years now (hence the need for a new deck!)The instructions say for ages 10 and up, though I think most 8 year olds could play this. But it's definitely an adult favorite too! Another nice feature of Wizard is that you can stop and take up the game another time...just save the score sheet.

It is a bit like Spades and Hearts in that you take tricks, but it has the added wrinkle of Jesters and Wizard cards that are more than just "wild" cards. A very good game! The only thing stopping me rating it 5 stars overall, is that you must have at least three players, which isn't always possible for us.
